Built originally in 1244 by Bishop Bingham across 2 branches of the Avon and
an island between the branches, in conjunction with St Nicholas's Hospital
on the north bank and adjoining the river, and with a Chapel on the island.
The larger part is of 6 arches, the smaller of 2 arches with a segmental centre
embrasure and smaller angular embrasure at the south end both on the east side.
Remains, probably complete of the old bridge are visible inside an outer casing
probably of Cl6 or C17 date. All ashlar stone with solid parapet and plain
splayed coping.
