Barn. Erected in second half of C18, the westernmost 9 bays
somewhat earlier than the easternmost 4 bays, but reusing C17 or
earlier timbers. Timber-framed barn on 4 feet high sandstone
plinth, the easternmost 4 bays on brick plinth. Exterior faced
in weatherboarding (part tarred) with half-hipped corrugated iron
roof. Lean-to to south. 3 cart entrances. Interior upright posts,
except those on either side of the cart entrances, have gunstock
jowls of possible late C16 date, other upright posts have typical
C18 profile. Wall frame has pattern of diagonal braces separated
by midrail. Roof has through purlins and ridgepiece with knees
pegged in to collar beam. Easternmost 4 bays have staggered
purlin roof and traces of weathering on tenth bay posts. One cart
entrance has reused timber with diamond-shaped grooves for
mullions. The easternmost end bay has been ceiled over and half
used as stabling and lined with large planks with hand-made
nails. Wooden saddle hooks, fixed loft ladder and brick drained
floor. Lean-to has through purlin and angled queen strut roof and
posts are on brick padstones. The lean-to was used as calf pen,
calf shed and faltering pens.
