653-1/4/746 (North West side)
Nos.56-59 (Consecutive)
GV II
Terrace of 4 houses (now 3), formerly the apprentice house for
Benyon and Bage's flax mill. c1800 with later modifications.
John Simpson, architect and builder. Brick with Welsh slate
roof. 3 storeys, wide 4-window range. Paired doors beneath
single pedimented hoods (one door now a window in right-hand
pair). 4-pane sash windows with cambered brick heads (blind
window spaces on ground and second storeys in left-hand unit).
Painted plaque in centre of elevation reads "Ann Hill". Hipped
roof to left, and 3-window-range return elevation, with wide
6-pane sashes, the central spaces blind. End wall and axial
stacks. The house is built of "great bricks", which link it
decisively with the Ditherington flax mill complex (qv), where
they were used in all building work prior to 1805.

Shrewsbury: Ironbridge: 1988-).
