Former Drill Hall
GV II
Drill hall, now an indoor market. 1874. Built to hold 1,000
persons. Killas rubble with granite dressings; dry Delabole
slate roof gable end on to the street, plus 3 linked hipped
roofs over wings on the right; front gable coped. Deep hall
plan plus porch and changing rooms on the right. Gothic style
with some classical style features.
Symmetrical 3-bay front: 2-centred arch to large traceried
rose window over pair of ordered round-arched doorways with
carved capitals and imposts to clustered shafts; name panel
above; flanking bays have 2-light transomed round-arched
windows under hood-moulds all framed within pilasters with
carved and moulded imposts to segmental arches; the mullions
are slender shafts with carved capitals; behind these are
hornless sash windows with glazing bars and fanlight heads.
Rear has central rose window with latticed glazing.
INTERIOR: wide-span tie-rod roof trusses; gallery at front
end.
