Walls and gazebo in garden to north
of Old Bell Hotel
GV II
Terrace of retaining and perimeter walls, and gazebo. C17 to
C19, with some medieval fabric surviving and incorporating
remains of demolished post-medieval cottages; early C20
landscaping, with gazebo of c1900-1910.
Limestone rubble, ashlar gazebo with slate roof.
Arts and Crafts style gazebo.
Parallel walls to end of garden and S side of Mill Lane,
separated by buttress sections with water tables,
incorporating medieval carved work, extending approx 150m from
NE corner of Old Bell Hotel extension and along rear of
garden. The gazebo, attached to the garden wall, has tall
windows, a pyramidal roof with 7 triangular dormers and a
finial, with steps up to the entrance.
INTERIOR: details of the gazebo include an Arts Nouveau style
fireplace and timber roof pendent.
HISTORICAL NOTE: retaining wall at the south side is along the
line of the former castle wall, built by Bishop Roger in
c1130. Northern section, which runs along Mill Lane, probably
follows the ditch of the Burghal Hidage defences and the north
limit of the late Saxon abbey precinct.
