House, now subdivided. Late C17/early C18, with C20
alterations . Red brick, Flemish bond, stucco, old tiled roofs
with lead roll hips over wide eaves cornice.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics. South elevation largely
stuccoed. 3 windows on first floor, 2 slightly recessed 9-pane
sashes with blind boxes, 1 recessed 6-pane sash above
projecting brick porch to right; ground floor has 2, 8-pane
sashes with blind boxes and door with 4 glazed panels and
fanlight below flat doorhood, with wrought-iron scroll
brackets, at right.
Projecting wing at right largely stuccoed with brick front has
2 wooden mullion and transom casements with 9 glazing bars, on
first floor, 1 similar window at left on ground floor, half
glazed door below leaded fanlight and flat doorhood, on
wrought-iron scroll brackets, at right. Brick front facing
south - 3-light lattice casement window on first floor;
3-light casement with wooden glazing bars on ground floor.
Side (east) elevation with modern single storey flat-roofed
extension at left, above which rises external chimney breast
and stack of main building; a second stack in re-entrant
corner. 2 first floor flush set 12-pane sash windows; ground
floor right centre. 1 large triple-light plain glazed sash
beneath segmental arch; modern half glazed doors centre and
right. Plat band at first-floor level with 6 cast-iron
circular tie plates below; post 1984 single storey red brick
extension with machine tiled roof at right.
Rear elevation, brick first floor, plastered ground floor, 2
widely separated nearly flush set sash windows extreme left
and right first and ground floors, the latter under segmental
arches. Small 2-light multi-pane casement in centre at landing
level, beneath which is modern plain half-glazed door.
Roof: 3 gabled leaded casement dormers to front, 1 at side on
left with wood casements, 1 box casement dormer at side on
right, and 3 leaded box casement dormers at rear. Brick
chimney stacks - to right, with tall brick shafts, 1 with
oversailing courses and 3 earthenware pots, and 1 multi-flue
stack without pots, in form of 2 connected but slightly offset
slabs of brickwork.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
The Steward's House adjoins the original school hall on the
east. Its structure, although much altered is a survivor from
the rebuilding of 1695. It was subdivided into separate
dwellings within the Chauncy Court elderly persons complex
after the school vacated the site in 1984.
