House. C17, altered C18 and C20. Timber-framed and plastered,
old tiled roof over deep eaves cornice and tall red brick
stack, rear right (east) also serving rear outshut.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics; 2 bay structure. First floor
has 2 flush-set 12-pane sash windows, with projecting
architrave surrounds, projecting plaster bead above
ground-floor window heads. Ground floor 2 sashes with C20
carriageway closed by boarded doors at left, and central
doorway with C20 8-panelled door, with flanking pilasters and
simple pediment above. Roof with 2 gabled casement dormers.
Rear has C20 fenestration, with 1 mullion and transom casement
on ground floor of rear outshut.
INTERIOR: much altered on ground floor through insertion of
carriageway, in which C17 studwork with primary bracing
exposed; late C20 stair cuts through moulded beam. Central
post with long jowl and chamfer visible against first floor
rear wall; first floor front right (east) bedroom has early
C19 reed and paterae fireplace surround with late C17 cupboard
alongside with wrought-iron hinges; 2 attics, but access stair
no longer extant, wide boarded floors.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the rear yard contained a range of tenements
in the C19; these were cleared in the 1930s. The carriageway
was created to provide a vehicular access in place of the
previous twitchell passage.
