II
Former butcher's shop. Ground floor front room only of late Victon'an terraced house. The walls are tiled with a frieze at ceiling height comprising coloured 'Art Nouveau' glazed tiles edged with plain green and black tiles. Plain, white-tiled walls below with panels of 'Art Nouveau' tiles incorporating an elongated, sinuous flower design. 'Tulip motif tiled frieze below. A marble-topped counter on one side of the shop bears panels of painted tiles on the fronts depicting cows and sheep in rural landscapes. These nine-tiled panels are 'framed' within a beaded border edged with plain green tiles; plain cream tiles between. Marble-topped counter on the other side with plainer tiled front. Floor laid with small black-and white tiles with geometric design. Trapdoor leads to original cold storage cellar. To rear of shop, full-height wooden payment kiosk with fitted desk and shelves behind, and areas of curved, engraved glass. Plain bevelled mirror glass panels in the doors flanking the kiosk. Woodwork in 'Queen Anne' revival style with dentilled cornice and scrolled door cases. Hanging from the ceiling: meat racks with scrolled brackets.
Original shop front with panels of coloured glass above set in moulded wooden surrounds.
A finely-fitted out butcher's shop, and a rare survival. Listed for the shop area only.
