Pair of terraced 1st rate town houses. 1775-77 Portland Estate
development by John Johnson, No. 61 fitted out for William Udny and No. 63
for Sir Charles Bampfylde. Stock brick; concealed slate roof. Generously
proportioned astylar elevation treated as a single tripartite composition
and axially closing the north vista of the Adam Brothers'mansfield Street
q.v. 4 storeys (top floor as attic storey) and basements. 7 windows wide
in all with centre 3 bays slightly advanced. Central composition of
semicircular arched doorways flanking similarly arched windows, all
recessed for one order with Coade stone vermiculated rustications, fluted
impost bands, head keystones, panelled doors, side lights and patterned
fanlights. Recessed renewed glazing bar sashes under flat gauged arches.
1st floor has continuous bracketed balcony with Victorian scrollwork iron
balustrade and tent roofed verandah; 2nd floor windows with tent hoods
added at same time as verandah. Main stucco cornice over 2nd floor and
attic cornice with blocking course. Plumbed spike area railings,
surviving urn finialed standard to right. Fine interiors rather in Wyatt
manner; geometrical stone staircases with delicate wrought iron
balustrades; plasterwork friezes and ceilings with inset painted panels,
arabesque and "Etruscan" details; apse ended library and segmental vaulted
and pendentive domed drawing room in No. 61; statuary marble
chimneypieces; etc.
