Small cottage, derelict, late C17 or early C18 single storey originally in rough
dressed stone with ashlar quoins raised to 2 storeys early C19, 1st floor in
finer dressed stone, stone slate roof. 2-room plan with gable entry to right of
stack now enclosed by C19 single storey extension. South front has chamfered
mullioned windows of 2 lights and 3 lights the latter lacking mullions. 1st
floor has 2 former 2-light flat faced mullioned windows lacking mullions with
plain stone surrounds. Rear has plinth formed by 2 courses of large dressed
stones; 2-light chamfered mullioned window with 2 flat faced mullioned windows
to 1st floor. Attached to right hand return wall is gabled C19 extension
lacking roof. This has doorway with monolithic jambs in gable and single light
window in south wall. This partly obscures original doorway with large lintel.
At junction with extension is 2-light chamfered mullioned window. Single
chamfered light over to 1st floor to former attic above which earlier roof line
is discernible. Gable stack. An isolated cottage on the furthest edges of
cultivation at the boundary with Stansfield Moor. It is likely this cottage was
used for seasonal work during summer pasturing. C.F. Stell, p.145.
