LITTLE THURLOW
BRADLEY ROAD
The Almshouse

(Formerly listed as Almshouses, LITTLE THURLOW)

19.12.61.

II*
A range of red brick almshouses endowed in 1618 by Sir Stephen Soame for nine poor people. Sir Stephen also built the old school house at about the same time (Old House q.v). The almshouses are built on an E-shaped plan with a forecourt in front, approached by steps from the road. They comprise nine rooms with a central room for "a person who should read prayers to the rest of the almspeople". The gabled centre part is one storey and attics and the wings are one storey. The windows are two- and three- light mullioned casements with stuccoed rusticated surrounds and lattice leaded lights. Sir Stephen Soame's coat of arms is carved on a stone panel above the doorway (similar to the old school house). Roof tiled, with detached diagonal shafted chimney stacks.
