Department store block. 1921-22 by Sir H. Tanner. Portland stone facing, concealed
roof. Classical eclecticism of Beaux Arts derivation overlaid with slightly
Egyptianising details. Four square block running back to Little Argyle Street, of 4
storeys and stepped attic storeys. Symmetrical front 7 major bays wide with
projecting 5 bay centre, splayed corners and 3 bay returns to Little Argyll Street,
Argyll Street and Great Marlborough Street. Ground floor shop windows, altered mid
C.20, and central entrance portal are framed by broad pilasters carrying entablature
with bronze lion head rings in frieze. Upper floors have triple groups of
architraved bronze casement windows to each major bay, the central windows in each
case with horns winged motif in figures; each major bay articulated through 3
storeys by giant, quasi-Corinthian order of pilasters carrying main entablature. 3-
bay centre-piece has attics carried up with pilasters and entablature with blocking
course. Bronze candelabra flank projecting 5-bay centre and 1st floor level and
there are cast iron balconies to 1st and 2nd floors.
