Built as chambers, opened as hotel and now a Club. 1864 by John
Norton. Red brick with blue brick and tile polychrome dressings
and banding and terracotta trim. Unusual brick "Lombard"
Romanesque-Gothic style for the West End. 4 storeys. 6 bays wide,
the eastern end an extension of 1900 in matching style. 2 windows
and doorway with round arches on granite columns flanked by
broad segmental arched club entrande to right (with c. 1900 canopy)
and carriage arch to left,both with shafted jambs. The 1st and
2nd floors have semicircular arched windows with blue bricks
patterning the impost bands, the arches and the spandrels. The 3rd
attic floor has small pairs of round arched windows with shafted
jambs and terracotta imposts. Heavy quatrefoil pierced painted
terracotta balcony across 1st floor and similarly pierced individual
balconies on heavy brackets to 2nd floor. Narrow coursing bands
of coloured tiles between storeys, the top floor with a
"pedestal" of diapering; corbelled cornice below parapet. The
carriage way has always provided access to the rear of Christie's
King Street Auction Rooms.
