HADLOW HARTLAKE ROAD, GOLDEN GREEN
TQ 64 NW
6/68 Hartlake Farmhouse and
20.9.76 Hartlake Cottage
GV II
Farmhouse, now divided. Late C17/early C18, modernised and divided into 2
circa 1976. Timber-framed on ragstone footings, the ground floor is
underbuilt with plastered brick and the first floor is peg-tile hung; brick
stacks and chimneyshafts; peg-tile roof.
Plan: Originally a double depth plan farmhouse facing south west comprising a
front and back room either side of a central front doorway, entrance hall and
main stair. The front rooms are larger. They were the principal rooms,
parlour to left and kitchen to right. Both have gable-end stacks, the large
kitchen one projects and includes an oven housing. Unheated service rooms to
rear. Circa 1976 the house was divided across the centre and now Hartlake
Cottage occupies the left (parlour) end and Hartlake Farmhouse has the right
(kitchen) end. Hartlake Cottage has an entrance through a circa 1970
extension onto the left end. Hartlake Farmhouse still uses the old front
doorway. 2 storeys with attics in the roofspace.
Exterior: Nearly symmetrical 3-window front of replacement C20 casements
containing rectangular beaded pane effect. C20 replacement central front door
and side light behind a contemporary gabled porch on plain timber posts. The
symmetry is upset by the single gabled dormer right of centre. The front roof
is gable-ended and the rear part has 2 parallel roofs at right angles to the
front roof and both are half-hipped. The left end extension and porch are in
the same style as the front.
Interior: Not available for inspection at the time of this survey. According
to the owners it was somewhat rearranged circa 1976, little carpentry detail
is exposed and the main stair has been rebuilt. Nevertheless the main
structure appears to be well-preserved. The former kitchen firpelace is
blocked but a good firpelace is reported from the former parlour.
