Terrace. Early-mid C19. Brown brick in Flemish bond, partly reddened. Stucco
ground floor, outer bays channelled stucco. Stucco dressings. 4 storeys and
basement. Symmetrical composition: originally 16-bay centre breakforward (2
bays of which to left have been replaced by C20 buildings) flanked by 12-bay
wings (two bays of the left wing adjoining central breakforward rebuilt in C20)
with further 10-bay breakforward to each side, the last 2 bays of which
breakforward further. Central breakforward: projecting Ionic porches and
round-arched windows, some sashes with margin lights. Outer bays: mainly
pilastered entrances with overlights, sashes, some with margin lights. No 166
now has bank front with sashes and pilastered round-arched entrance, now blocked
with C20 window, and modillioned fascia, return to London Street contains
entrance. First floor: iron balconies, except stucco balustrade somewhat altered
to central range. Casements or sashes, some with glazing bars in architraves.
Hoods on consoles to centre range and pediments of 2 bays at each end. Above,
casements or sashes with glazing bars in architraves, except for 3rd floor of
centre range. 3rd floor sill band becomes cornice to centre range. Further
cornice to parapet. Iron basement railings. Known originally as Grand Junction
Road, Sussex Gardens formed an important feature of the original layout of
Bayswater.
