(formerly listed as "St. John's Hospital")
GV
II
Row of eleven almshouses. Founded mid C17 by Sir John Lewis; altered and
restored, with C20 addition. Magnesian limestone blocks, stone slate roof.
Linear single-depth plan, with modern rear outshut. Two storeys, 1 bay each;
plinth, string course; doorways coupled except the first at the left end, all
with chamfered surrounds and panelled doors; each cottage has one 2-light
chamfered mullion window on each floor, all at ground floor slightly recessed
and all above flush (and all restored). Rebuilt stone chimneys: one at each
gable and 5 on the ridge. Gables have stone coping with kneelers, but the
masonry below shows the line of a formerly more steeply-pitched roof. Rear
now of less interest. Interior not inspected.
