Baytree Cottage
II
Cottage. Circa mid to late C17, extended in circa C18. Plastered
timber frame, south end partly weatherboarded. Steeply pitched
corrugated iron sheet roof, with gabled end, formerly half-
hipped. Brick axial stack. Plan: Small 2-room plan cottage, both
rooms with direct entry from doorways in gable ends. The larger
right hand (N) room is heated from the axial stack. The small
unheated left hand (S) room appears to be an C18 addition.
Exterior: 1 storey and attic. 1 window east elevation and 2
window west elevation. North and south gable ends each have attic
window in gable (the south end has C20 ground floor window) and
C20 door. Mainly circa late C19 or C20 2-light casements with
glazing bars; south end has small 6-pane wrought iron window in
gable. Interior: 2 timber frame bays; the original north bay with
wall studding and tension braces; the later south bay with light
scantling studs. Principal north room has chamfered cross-beam
without stops and unchamfered joists and original fireplace
blocked with later grate. Small unheated south room has exposed
joists but no main beam. Ladder stairs rise from north room with
3-panel door at foot with wrought iron strap hinges. North
chamber has large exposed wall plates, tie-beams, wall studs and
tension braces and exposed common rafters. Apex of roof ceiled.
Roof has clasped purlins and collars pegged to principals; the
south bay, exposed, without principal rafters.
