BISHOPS CLEEVE
The Grange
II
House. Built 1865 for the Griffiths family; squared and coursed limestone with
ashlar dressings; gabled plain tile roofs with tile crestings and bargeboards;
ashlar ridge stacks finished in rendered octagonal flues. L-plan with rear left
wing. Gothic Revival style. Front (east elevation) of 2 storey and attic,
triple-gabled 5-window range. Gabled centre bay has ironstone tympanum arch over
pointed-arched 2-light attic window, canted oriel window with leaded lights, stone
mullions and transom, and fine foliate carving to corbels above moulded pointed-
arched doorway with finely-carved foliate capitals to engaged shafts and stops to
hood mould; inner porch has hood mould with foliate stops over lancet lights
flanking studded door with fine scrolled wrought-iron hinges set in pointed-arched
architrave; 2-light pointed-arched attic windows and ironstone tympanum arches
over similar mullioned and transomed windows with leaded-lights, including
crenellated bay window to ground floor of gabled bay to left which has bracketed
pointed-arched bargeboards with carved detail. Similar detail to other
elevations, which are asymmetrically composed and include stair tower to north,
bargeboarded gable over 2-storey canted bay window to south and pointed-arched
doorway with studded door flanked by gabled bays with bargeboards to west.
Interior not inspected but noted as retaining original features.
