Model farm group. Mid C19. Banded brickwork and flint, some frame and
boarded cladding, slate roofs. An intact courtyard group model farm, with a
second stock yard enclosed by walls at a lower level on the north side. Stock
yard, with some dividing central walls, has two or three-storey structures on
all sides; opposite the entrance is main barn, to left is stable block with
cart shed, and a small house, to the right a long arched shelter shed with
loft over, and continuous drainage tunnel below. The entrance side to the
east, is flanked by a low framed and boarded unit to the right, with a flint
gable wall, and to the left a similar, open fronted unit, flanked by small
house with 2 and 3 casements and lofty brick stacks. Far right is a hipped
end over plain gable wall with brick quoins, central vertical band, and
horizontal bands, above a segmental arched opening to a slurry or drainage
tunnel; a lean-to, to the right, continuous full length of the return, is
framed, with open shed facing stockyard enclosed by walls; upper half of
lean-to is boarded, and main wall behind has vertical and horizontal lacing in
brick. To right end at low level is brick built kennels.
Main barn outer face has large central paired sliding doors, two smaller
doors to segmental heads, and 4 other openings. Inner face has wide paired
doors to segmental arch, flanked each side by contemporary lean-to structures.
Range to south, adjoining approach road, has framed and part-boarded unit,
then banded brick and flint run, with wide, segmental headed opening below a
loading opening, and a further loading door at mid-length. The inner face
of this unit has two casements with small-paned iron units, a 2-light wood
casement, 2 segmental headed openings, and a flight of steps to a landing over
an arched tunnel, with two plank doors in brick jambs. Interior: main barn
has 4 central bays to queen-post trusses, and collar trusses at either end;
loft over open-front shelter to the north has series of king post trusses.
This is a very well retained complete model farm group, built as part of the
Portman Estate by the first Viscount Portman in about 1850, and now Crown
Property.
