Description

KENTON
SX 98 SW

5/288 The White Bridge

- II*

Road bridge on the drive to Oxton House. Circa 1830, contemporary with the
remodelling of Oxton House (q.v.). Cast iron, stamped 'J Vickary Exeter'; Greek
Revival.
An unusual design; cast iron beam construction. Single span with cambered arched
beams and ornate cast iron balustrades fixed to paired squat cast iron fluted Doric
columns at each end, the columns crowned with vase finials and supported on stone
piers with cornices. The outer faces of the cambered beams are treated as Doric
entablatures with laurel wreaths between the triglyphs and guttae; on top of the
entablature onward curving balustrades of cast iron oblongs linked to one another and
the rails by interlaced circles. The bridge matches the gate piers and gate at the
entrance to North Kenwood (q.v.), presumably once on the boundary of the park to
Oxton House.
