Description

HENELY MAIN ROAD
TM 15 SE
4/124 The Cottage
-
- II
House, early C16; a lower section to right is perhaps later C16. 1 storey and
attics. Timber-framed and plastered. Thatched roof, hipped at the left hand
end, with plastered axial chimney. C20 casements with leaded lights. C20 oak
framed entrance porch with plaintiled roof and boarded door. Fully-exposed
framing of good quality, especially for diminutive size of house; close
studwork and heavy unchamfered 1st floor joists. The service end partition
was removed and knees were inserted to support the remaining 1st floor beam,
one knee being carved with the date 1774. Large open fireplace inserted into
hall in C17. The lower single-cell block to right is of slightly inferior
quality and of different date; the present upper floor was only inserted in
C18/19 and this may therefore be an open hall of early C16 or earlier.
Various extensions of C20 to rear.
