Description

BRAMFORD SOMERSHAM ROAD
TM 14 NW
7/85 Dairy Farmhouse
-
II
House, formerly farmhouse. Early C16, a crosswing added to left in early C18
and another wing to left in C19. 2 storeys and attics. Timber-framea and
plastered. Plaintiled roofs with various C18 and later chimneys of red brick.
Mainly C20 small-pane casements. In the cross-wing is an attic casement with
leaded lights of C18 or early C19. C20 boarded entrance door. An open-hall
house of late and unusual form, which seems only to have been 2 bays long.
The left-hand bay is long with an upper floor of heavy lodged joists. The
right-hand bay was open to the roof and had an open hearth. The central truss
has an arch-braced tie-beam and a square crown-post with bracing to the
collar-purlin; the roof over the hall bay is smoke-blackened and was
originally hipped. A large chimney was inserted in the hall later in C16, of
which only the lintel and jambs remain. A 1st floor and attic floors were
added in C17 or C18. Nearly all the original structure is of chestnut.
