Description

FLOWTON ELMSETT ROAD
TM 04 NE
6/112 Gates Farmhouse
- II
GV
Farmhouse. Early C17, extended in 2 phases in C18 and mid C19. A 2-cell
lobby entrance house of 1 storey with attics. Timber-framed and plastered.
Plaintiled roof with gabled casement dormers. An axial C17 chimney of red
brick with diagonally-set square flues on a square plinth. Various small-pane
casements and sashes of C19 and C20. Mid C19 4-panelled entrance door with
good timber-framed entrance porch; diagonal beaded boarding and plaintiled
gabled roof with undulating bargeboards. Small-pane side windows. The
doorway has an arched head with pierced spandrels, supported on carved
brackets. Plain timber-framing exposed internally; the storey-posts have
jowls which support the upper-floor beams and then continue at the increased
thickness up to wall-plate level - an unusual variation.
