Pound at south end of common
- II
Pound. Dated 1846. Sandstone rubble with dressed quoins and rubble
coping. Walls are about 2 metres tall and enclose a pound of about 6
metres square. Wide opening on SE side with wooden gate-posts. A
section of the wall at the west corner has fallen down. One of the
stones near the top of the NE wall is roughly inscribed:- 'BILT 1846'
and either 'MINE' or 'MINER'. It is said that the pound might have
been rebuilt by miners froma coal mine at Baxterley, about half a
mile away. The mine owners were the Dugdales of Merevale Hall, whose
estate included Bentley.
