Public Library. 1900 by Alexander Robert Hennell ARIBA. in Arts
and Crafts Classical style. Red brick in Flemish bond with
terracotta dressings and slate roof with terracotta and brick
banded chimney. Administrative accommodation to right, library to
left. Right hand part has projecting gable to right with 12-pane
sash with curved pediment and brackets, and to left an octagonal
cupola with lead roof. Across the whole front of the building is
a deep terracotta frieze of cherubs kneeling on one knee with
floral swags and blank shields. 2 circular windows with keystone
below to corner. Under the gable are, on the first floor, 2 12-
pane sashes with curved heads and to the ground floor a large
Venetian window with Art Nouveau lily motif to glazing. Basement
has Diocletian window with large keystone. Banded terracotta to
ground floor. Left side doorcase with massive terracotta cornice
on brackets and flight of steps with terracotta balustrading. To
left is 1 storey library with good contemporary lettering "PUBLIC
LIBRARY". Front has round-headed window with keystone flanked by
tall windows with original lily motif Art Nouveau glazing.
Terracotta cornice. Side elevation has 6 round-headed windows
with keystone and lily glazing. Roof has hipped skylight with 14
x 2 fixed leaded lights divided by wooden pilasters: single
doorcase. Interior has double doors and round-headed arched
doorcase with lily glazing. The Library has internal pillars and
huge brackets. A series of 6 round-headed arches on each side.
