CADBURY
PITT LANE
Pitt Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. C17 or earlier origins, truncated in the early C20. Whitewashed
plastered cob with thatched roof with a plain ridge, gabled at ends ; projecting
front lateral stack to right of centre, rear lateral stack to left of centre ; rear
outshut heated by rear outshut stack.
Plan: Single depth main range, 2½ rooms wide, the centre room heated by the front
lateral stack, the left hand room heated by the rear lateral stack with the entrance
into the half room at the right end. The centre room is C17 in origin, the flanking
rooms are more difficult to date. In the early C20 the house was 5 rooms wide, the
left hand room shared the same roof structure as the present house but functioned as
a separate cottage. In about 1920 the cottage was largely dismantled and is now used
as an outbuilding and one and a half rooms at the right hand end of the range were
also dismantled. The rear outshut postdates the main range.
Asymmetrical 4 window front, the front elevation curving out round the lateral stack.
Porch on front at extreme right ; fenestration of C19 or early C20 casements with
glazing bars. A curious feature of the front elevation and right return is the
fragments of china, metal and tiles which have been fixed to the plaster in decorative
patterns by the present owner.
Interior Completely unmodernized. The principal room has a step-stopped cross beam,
the fireplace has been partly rebuilt. The left hand room has a plastered over cross
beam.
