2/73 Weeks headstone and Mogridge chest
- tomb including railings immediately
south west of the aisle of the
Church of the Holy Cross
GV II
Headstone and chest tomb, each surrounded by iron railings. Early C19 chest tomb,
mid C19 headstone.
The rectangular chest tomb is rendered with a plain oversailing lid. Inscription on
lid commemorates William Mogridge, died 1829 and other members of the family. A
panel on the west end commemorates Salome Weeks, died 1849. The chest is surrounded
by good railings with reeded verticals with fishtail finials. The corner verticals
are columnar with urn finials. These railings are identical to those surrounding the
Drake chest tomb (q.v.).
The headstone to the north, also surrounded by iron railings has a scrolled head and
an inscription commemorating Susan Weeks, died 1851 and other members of the family.
The railings surrounding the headstone are plainer than those round the chest tomb
with spearhead finials to the verticals and columnar uprights at the corner with urn
finials.
A small stone at the west end of the railings surrounding the chest tomb is inscribed
"Entrance to vault".
A good group including the railings. Other memorials with railings survive in the
churchyard and are a significant feature of the selling of the Church.
