SPELDHURST
12/556 Group of 3 chest tombs approx
8m north of the porch of the
Church of St Mary the Virgin
GV II

Group of 3 headstones. First half of the C19. The one closest to the church
is white marble and sarcophagus-shaped. It is completely overgrown with ivy
and therefore no inscription was noted. Another white marble chest tomb close
by is rectangular in plan its flat lid has moulded edges and it has a moulded
plinth. Panelled corner pilasters and plain rectangular panels each side.
The south panel has collapsed but the remains of the inscription in Roman
serif capitals records the death of Jacob Jeddere in 1833. Close by is
another chest tomb. This is sandstone and similar in form except that the
panels here project with indented corners. Inscription in Roman serif
capitals on the south side records the death of John Beecher of Mount Ephraim,
Tunbridge Wells, in 1830.
