Dutch barn. c. 1830. 5 bay barn. Timberframed, open on 3 sides, closed only to
south. South side has frame of staggered midrails and diagonal braces and is clad in elm
weatherboarding. Hipped slate roof. Softwood frame with through purlins, collar
beams and ridge piece. Western posts have diagonal struts to upright posts, eastern
posts have bolted knees. Bolted foot braces. Rafters and collar braces have been
replaced. Dutch barns originated in the late C18 when, owing to the industrialization
of agriculture hay ricks become inadequate for storing hay. Included as an example
of a rare building type.
