7/141 No. 18
- (Posset Bridge)
G.V. II
Bridge and horse tunnel. 1804. Benjamin Outram and Thomas
Brown engineers. Rock-faced and dressed sandstone with
ashlar dressings. Three openings: one the canal, one a
branch to the lime kilns (now blocked) and a horse tunnel,
there is also a boatman's passage giving access from pound
level to the upper level. The 2 canal arches are skew, semi-
circular and have keystones. A battered pier separates them
and a band is largely obscured by a C20 footbridge. The
parapets (some of which are missing) are of ashlar blocks
with rounded tops. The horse tunnel is a compressed
horseshoe arch with keystone, stone band and square piers to
either side.
