Circa 1830-40. Originally perhaps a group of houses. Large, 4 storeys stucco
faced with frieze and moulded projecting cornice over 2nd floor, moulded parapet
coping over 3rd floor. Mansard slate roof. The building is set on a slight
curve. The north front, overlooking the Valley, has 18 windows, 3 each end
in slight projections, those to west in 4 storey bow; flanking modified Corinthian
pilasters above rusticated ground floor. Pilasters dividing 1st floor windows
of western bow. Recessed sash windows, square on 3rd floor across front.
On 1st floor, between projections, large windows have been inserted leaving
alternate original ones in architrave surrounds with cornices over, same 1st
floor windows on projections. On ground floor single sashes alternate with
3 window bows. Iron balcony across 1st floor. The east end facing sea has
5 windows, 3 to centre in full height bow with cornice over on lst floor supported
by pilasters dividing windows, balcony. The flanking 1st floor windows have
cornices on shaped brackets. The ground floor of bow is cut back with 2 supporting
Ionic colurnns to front. The south entrance front to Belmont Road is slightly
concave, frieze and cornice returned, rusticated ground floor. 16 windows and
2 blind windows. The 2 window bays each end flanked above ground floor by
modified Corinthian pilasters. Architrave surrounds to 1st and 2nd floor windows,
both with sill courses. Modern entrance. Dominating position above the Valley
and as seen from St Nicholas Cliff.
Esplanade Hotel, Nos 1 to 19 (consec), the Villa Esplanade Hotel and Nos 20
to 29 (consec), The Esplanade; and Prince of Wales Hotel, Prince of Wales Terrace,
all form a group.
