House, now offices. c1840. Grey brick with painted stone or
stucco dressings. Slate roof.
EXTERIOR: facade symmetrical, of 3 storeys and 5 bays, with
the central bay and pilaster strips to left and right breaking
forward slightly. The 2nd floor windows have a deep sill band,
and above the frieze a timber gutter cornice projects forwards
on ornamented brackets. The glazing bar sash windows are
deeply recessed and have rubbed brick flat arches. The central
window on the 1st floor has an architrave. The attic is lit by
2 dormers. The door has 2 glazed panels above 6 raised and
fielded panels and is set within an architrave with a cornice
on console brackets. The porch is supported on baseless
unfluted Doric columns and has a dentilled cornice and a
frieze decorated with roundels. Chimneys on gables in front of
and behind ridge.
INTERIOR: not inspected. RCHM records original hall and
staircase divided by Corinthian pilasters and an enriched
entablature, with original doorcases and alcove off
half-landing with fluted columns.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: cast-iron railings on stone copings
surround the basement area.
A bronze plaque records that the poet WH Auden was born here
21 February 1907.
