(North Side)

11/34 Long Sutton Manor

-
- II*

C16, Cl7, C19. Large house of several periods; 2 storeys and attic. A
long north-south early timber-framed structure of the earliest date, has
at its south end (on the west side) a long narrower and lower timber-framed
wing, mainly of the 2nd period; at the south east corner a T-shaped Victorian
block (of a slightly larger scale) has been attached, and in the angles
of the junction are porches front and back. Red tile gabled roofing
throughout, one south gable and the upper part of two others on the south
and east being tile-hung with scalloped courses. Massive shafted stack
above the oldest part, a lesser one on the wing and a Victorian stack are
prominent features. On the north side the old walling has exposed timber-
framing, bricknogged but there are sections of close studding filled with
flint. Elsewhere there is red brickwork, the west wing in Flemish bond
with 1st floor band and plinth, the Victorian section in English bond with
higher 1st floor band and a plinth. Leaded casements are used in the older
parts, some being old (one old cill is supported on a curved bracket):
the latest parts have sashes and some small casements and include a ground-
floor bay (to the south) and a 2-storeyed bay (to the east). The main
entrance is a flat roofed porch with part brick walling and an open timber-
framework to the front, containing a frame of plain balusters on arch bracing.
The rear has an open porch with a pitched roof canopy on a corner post,
with a doorway to the old part having an architrave and a ½-glazed door.
