Farmhouse. Probably early C16, remodelled in late C16 or early C17, lower end
rebuilt in C18. Rendered stone rubble and cob. Thatch roof with plain ridge,
hipped at right end, gable end to left. Rear lateral stone rubble hall stack
heightened in brick and to brick stacks to rear of lower end.
Plan. 2 rooms to each side of cross-passage containing staircase at rear with
additional staircase in room at right end, which has separate external access.
Development. Interesting development, obscured by inaccessibility of roof space.
The hall and unheated inner room to left of the cross-passage are divided by a thick
cob wall partition rising through 2 storeys. The raised cruck truss over the lower
end of the hall is set so low in the walls as to leave little doubt that this was
originally an open hall house, but it is unclear whether the inner room was ceiled
from the outset, the early C16 doorway between the hall and inner room nevertheless
suggesting they are of an integral build. The lower end appears to have been
entirely rebuilt in the C18 for occupation as a separate unit with a near
symmetrical arrangement of 2 rooms heated by separate fireplaces set diagonally
across the rear opposing angles, with a staircase against the rear wall and direct
entry into the right-hand room. The left-hand room in C20 has been returned to the
main range for use as a lower end parlour, the right-hand room unoccupied at time of
survey (June 1986).
2 storeys. 4-window range. Early C20 fenestration, all 2-light casements to upper
storey except at right end which is of 3 lights. Ground floor has a single light
and 3-light casement to hall to left of C19 plank door and chamfered door surround
to cross-passage flanked by buttresses. Two 3-light windows to lower end flanking
buttress to left of corrugated iron leanto porch with plank door.
Interior. Apart from minor C20 alterations to the lower end parlour and inner
room, and replacement of staircase to rear of cross-passage, the interior is
remarkably unspoilt. Hall has open fireplace with dressed stone jambs and C19
lintel concealing the original. Wide chamfered cross ceiling beam with hollow step
stops and chamfered bressumer to upper end of hall. 2-centred arched doorway
between hall and inner room with chamfered surround. C17 straight-headed doorway
with hollow-step stopped durns between hall and inner room chamber. Raised cruck
truss over hall/cross passage partition closed at least to collar level, the collar
apparently morticed and tenoned into blade soffits. The purlins and probably entire
medieval roof structure appear to be intact over hall and inner room. Trusses with
straight principals of a much flatter pitch to lower end. Principally C19 joinery
with plank doors intact.
