Description

SS 62 SW SATTERLEIGH AND
WARKELEIGH
3/188 Pugsley Farmhouse
-

- II

Farmhouse. C17 with possibly earlier fabric concealed, remodelled and extended at
rear in C19, with C20 alterations. Painted rendered stone rubble and cob. Slate
roof with gable ends, the hall and inner room section at right end with asbestos
slate roof. Front lateral hall stack with offsets, heightened in brick. Rendered
shaft to stone rubble stack at right gable end, and small axial rendered stack
heating lower end.
Plan. 3 rooms with cross-passage containing staircase, hall and inner room to right
with 2-storey late C19 dairy wing added to rear of hall, and former kitchen to left
of passage; beyond the kitchen, and now converted to form part of dwelling, is an
additional range extending to the left and consisting of a large unheated room with
external front access and a former cider-house, now a storage shed at left end.
There are no visible straight joints in the resulting impressively long range, the
heightening of the eaves and consequent replacement of the roof structure, and also
the internal remodelling in the C19 obscuring any early development.
2 storeys. 6-window range in all. C20 fenestration with four 3-light windows, 2
panes per light and two 2-light casements at right end. 3-light casement to 2-
storey hall bay built out in line with stack. Plank doors to cross-passage and
former outbuilding towards left end.
Interior. Chamfered cross ceiling beam to hall. Panelled door to small cupboard in
solid cob wall partition between hall and inner room. Chamfered axial ceiling beam
to inner room, hacked to take plaster. Late C19 slate chimneypiece. Creamery
niche to rear wall of former kitchen. C19 joinery principally intact. C19 roof
structure.
