3/109 Little Deptford Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Late C17 or possibly early C18 (a plasterwork overmantel dated 1711 has
since been removed) remodelled in late C19 with C20 alterations. Rendered stone
rubble and cob. Asbestos slate roof with shaped corbels at the gable ends. Rebuilt
stone rubble stacks at each end and tall stone rubble rear lateral hall stack with
tapered cap and offsets.
Plan: based on modified 3-room-and-cross-passage type, the wide passage divided
axially to create a dairy at the rear with kitchen to left containing staircase
running up right-hand wall, and hall and inner room to right, with staircase to rear
of latter entering hall at rear right-hand corner. Solid cob partition to each end
of hall. Blocked doorway formerly giving direct entry with hall suggests the
farmhouse may at one time have been divided into 2 occupations. There are no
exposed C17/C18 features suggesting a complete remodelling in the late C19 when the
eaves were heightened and roof structure replaced.
2 storeys. 4 window range. 2-light casements, 6 panes per light above 2 C20 3-
light windows flanking C20 porch and French windows to inner room at right end
enclosed by leanto C20 porch.
Interior: original fireplaces probably survive concealed behind C20 ones. The hall
ceiling was replaced in C20. Moulded plaster roundel dated 1711 over inner room
fireplace removed in C20.
