Large complex of contemporary farmbuildings. Circa 1850. Mostly roughly coursed
volcanic stone with large dressed quoins, some brick; slate roofs. 4 ranges of
farmbuildings around large courtyard. The east range, adjoining Uton Barton
Farmhouse (q.v.) houses stables with haylofts over; the north range a large central
barn over a shippon with granary and linhays, the west range a linhay and small
stable; and the south range a cartshed and workshop/stores separated by farmyard
entrance, the workshop/stores adjoining the west end of Uton Barton Farmhouse
(q.v.). East stable range built as 2 stables with hayloft loading bays over each
door and flanking windows with harness room. Original arrangement altered by
insertion of large sliding door at left end and small central door, both in C20.
13-bay roof. North range has large central gable-ended double barn over a shippon
standing higher and breaking forward from flanking granary and linhays. The
shippon basement is built of snecked volcanic stone with a front 5-bay arcade of
round-headed brick arches. The brick barn above is also 5 bays having 2 large
doorways with segmental arches and vestigial, pilaster-like cheeks alternating with
the 3 large unglazed mullion-and-transom windows with vertical iron bars and
shutters, also with segmental brick arches. 7-bay roof. The granary to right is
built in the same style and has 2 ground floor round-headed arches right of a
flight of granite steps with iron railings up to the granary door. Hayloft loading
door to right with small window between. A large granite drinking trough occupies
the space beneath the granary steps and against the projecting barn wall. A 4½=bay
Alcock's Type T1 linhay continues to meet east range stables. A similar 4-bay
linhay continues left from barn to west range which comprises another similar 9-bay
linhay with a small stable or cowshed with hayloft over at left end adjoining south
range. The south range faces south (away from courtyard) and includes a cartshed
with hayloft over left of entrance and a 2-storey 5-window workshop/store block to
right adjoining the farmhouse. Well preserved large mid-C19 planned courtyard of
contemporary farm buildings.
