Description

SJ 8990 MERSEY SQUARE
701-/15/10015
Steps adjacent to former Plaza Cinema

GV
II

Steps. 1929 by the Stockport County Borough Engineer's Department, dated in shield on structure. Portland stone. Double flight of steps with single debouchements linking Wellington Road at the top of a very steep incline with Mersey Square at the bottom. The hillside is held back by a series of high walls, treated sculpturally, that form an impressive composition round the steps, with bronze lamp bases in three pairs at different levels, and bronze railings to Wellington Road. This classical piece of civic improvement forms a group with the Plaza Cinema alongside.
