Shop and office. Mid C16. Timber-framed and rendered with
roofs of plain tiles and asbestos sheeting over wing. Hall and
cross-wing plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and one storey with attic; 2-window range
with 2-storey wing; rear extension. The cross-wing has roof
plates exposed and front and is jettied with off-centre C19
two-light window in flat surround with miniature panes in
upper third. The hall range has one large and one small C19
gabled dormer, each with barge-boards, imitation framing and
similar casements with upper panes. C19 stack through front
roof slope and roof hips back at ridge to cover 2-storey rear
extension. C20 shop fronts with large plate-glass areas. Rear
wing has long 2-storey C19 rear extension.
INTERIOR: part of the cross wing/hall partition survives with
deep-section girding beam, substantial main post and arched
wall brace. To the rear of the hall is a wide-arched
cross-passage door head and adjoining post with rebate for
door at side and mortice for spere. Inserted C17 floor and
base of arch brace through ceiling possibly to central truss.
Cross-wing is former parlour/solar with studwork substantially
intact on 1st floor, with internal wall-bracing, jowled posts
and solid knee braces between central posts and tie beam. Hall
was of usual 2 unequal bays and collar purlin survives with
one encased longitudinal brace and mortices for others. Part
of the braces for mid-hall tie beam survive beneath inserted
floor. Rear of cross-wing was of hip and gablet type. Inserted
C19 stack with small fireplaces. Rear C17 extension has spine
beam and exposed joists of square section.
