Shops with flats. Mid C16 and early C19. Timber-framed and
rendered with 3 parallel plain tile roofs. At right-angles to
frontage, hipped to front and gabled to rear, behind plain
parapet.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; 3-window range; large C16 block to rear
of No.32A, and C20 flat-roofed brick-built rear extension to
No.32. 2nd floor has 3 small flush sash windows with flat
surrounds. 1st floor has remains of wide tripartite sash
windows with moulded surrounds either side of similarly
altered sash window, all partially obscured by tall shop
fascias. Three C20 shop fronts with recessed entrances. Stack
behind front range to east and through front roof slope on
west flank of No.32A.
2-storey rendered, possibly late C16, extension to rear of
No.32A with gabled peg-tile roof and with further
single-storey red-brick C19 extension with gabled peg-tile
roof and small gable end stack. The rear gable of No.32A wraps
partially across rear gable of No.32.
INTERIOR: 2 eastern bays consist of a mid C16 3-storey
timber-frame, formerly jettied on each floor and originally
with 2 gables to the front. The 2 parallel roofs have side
purlins with arched wind bracing and queen post from the
unbraced tie beams. A further bay of roof projected rearward
from No.32, and at its removal the open truss was infilled
with studwork. The rear wall of No.32A has a diamond-mullioned
window above tie-beam level, now infilled with daub. To the
rear of this is a very large square stack of probable early
C17. The rear range here has side-purlin roof of reused
timbers and is of 2 bays with stack bay and cambered tie beams
on jowled posts.
The upper storey construction of Nos 32 & 32A is an unusually
early example of lack of continuity in the framing with a
3-bay roof over a 2-bay concept on ground and 1st floor. No.30
has a timber-frame of the C17, 3 bays in depth and possibly
with earlier work on the ground floor.
