House and shop. Late C15 and mid C19. Main range of rendered
brick with some rendered timber-framing and plain tile roofs;
red-brick stack and rendered stack. Complex plan form: front
range has gabled cross-wing to north-west and wing to
south-east end.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; cross-wing has scalloped barge-boards,
2-light window in gable and plain 1st-floor window; C20 shop
front of plate glass with fascia, wrapping partially across
main range to south-east; this is of 2 storeys with red-brick
stack and rendered stack on south-east end, where there is a
narrower projecting 2-storey gabled block, the front of which
has 2 blind window openings and 3 segmental-headed plain sash
windows on 1st floor. The ground floor has the shop front, 2
door openings, one to house, a C19 window and a C20 shop
window.
The rear has a projecting 2-storey wing making a T-plan, and
mixture of C19 mullioned-and-transomed windows and
margin-glazed sashes. Abutting the north-west end is the
remnant of an earlier house with rendered walls and plain tile
hipped roof with gablet. The rear 1st floor of this has a
6-pane sash with moulded surround and a 3-light casement. The
ground floor is concealed behind flat-roofed rear extensions.
INTERIOR: the early part is a former solar/parlour cross-wing
of c1500, now forming part of shop. This structure was
associated with 2-storey late C16 building adjoining (qv No.2,
The Square) which replaced former open hall. The cross-wing
was of 2 bays, set well back from street and has jowled posts
and an arched wall brace, now visible from adjoining property.
The crown-post roof has a lower collar to strengthen the
gablet framing, as seems usual in Maldon.
