Bowes Morrell House

Formerly known as: No.117 WALMGATE.
House, now offices. c1400, with later extensions, one of late
C17; restored 1966. Timber-framed with plastered infilling and
pantile roofs: C17 extension of orange brick in random bond
with brick-coped gable of tumbled brick, brick stack and
gabled dormer.
PLAN: hall and crosswing plan, with extensions to both.
EXTERIOR: 2-storey 2-window gabled crosswing to street, with
jettied first floor; 2-storey 1-bay hall to right. C20 board
door to hall, with single light windows on both floors of
crosswing. Left return: 2-storey 3-bay crosswing to right of
2-storey 3-bay extension. Crosswing has casement, fixed or
pivoting single light windows on both floors: extension has
unequal 9-pane ground and first floor sashes to two bays, and
blind third bay. Raised brick first floor band.
INTERIOR: hall has full height posts, roughly chamfered rails
and wall plates: three-quarter round moulded joists to
inserted floor. Roof has crown post truss at each end with
cross braces, and longitudinal braces. Crosswing has chamfered
beams, one end shaped and enlarged, and rough joists, mostly
original, on ground floor. On first floor, full-height posts
support 4 crown post roof trusses with slightly cambered tie
beams and tenoned rafters. C17 extension has chamfer-stopped
beams on ground floor and large brick hearth beneath
segment-arched timber bressumer; first floor room has small
round-arched brick fireplace with reset basket grate. Roof is
of principal trusses with collared rafters and single purlins.
