Large house, now flats. c1860, altered C20. Attributed to
Cuthbert Brodrick. Coursed squared gritstone and ashlar, slate
roof. 3 storeys, 3 x 1 bay S-facing range with a lower-roofed
wide central rear wing.
S front: central stone porch with paired chamfered columns and
keyed segmental arch, acanthus motif on gable; 6-panel door,
the top 3 glazed. Fenestration: ground and 1st floors, bays 1
and 3 have 3-light plate-glass sashes (some frames replaced)
with chamfered mullions and shouldered arches; single-light
windows centre. Paired windows to 2nd floor. Continuous sill
bands are carried right around the building. Ornate paired
gutter brackets to deep eaves.
The front range has ornate gables to left and right returns, a
canted bay window and 3-light windows on right return and to
the rear wing. Rear: the wide wing has a semicircular bay
window with 3-light window above on right; a wide gable with
round window and deep eaves as front. The roadside facade has
single-light windows, a gable left and altered openings centre
and right for flat entrances.
INTERIOR: entrance hall divided into two; Minton floor tiles
remain in left hall, staircase removed when converted to flats
c1930. The rear room with semicircular bay window has ceiling
cornice and rose, carved wooden fireplace with swags and bird
trophies.
The wide rear wing, round window and eaves detailing are
similar to Brodrick's Oakfield, No.7 Alma Road (qv).
