Liverpool Canal Basin

Crane. Mid C19. Cast-iron, hexagonal concrete plinth.
HISTORICAL NOTE: although the importance of the canal declined
with the advent of the railways the canal wharf here remained
an important stone depot. Arthur Speight founded a company
c1830 and in 1893 David Speight advertised himself as: 'David
Speight, Stone Merchant, Pavior, Contractor, etc... Large
stone wharves for stock, stables, plant and offices. Best
known is Bolton Wood stone, 70-100 hands employed'.

Century's Progress: Yorkshire Industry and Commerce: 1893-:
191).
