Chards House
II
House. Circa 1830's; possibly by John Patch of Crewkeme. Coursed dressed limestone with Hamstone dressing. Slate roof with gabled ends. Brick gable-end stacks. PLAN: Double-depth plan with central entrance, passage between the two principal front rooms and straight staircase behind the front left room. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic. Almost symmetrical 2-window front. C19 16-pane sashes, in opening with slightly cambered stone arches and slate cills. Doorway, a little to right of centre, with Hamstone ashlar recessed architrave with round arch and reeded imposts, semi-circular fanlight and C19 6-panel door. Two C20 roof-lights at front. Rear elevation not inspected. INTERIOR: Much of the original joinery remains, including:- panelled doors, a stick-baluster staircase and chimneypieces; a marble chimneypiece with slim fluted half-columns with lion paws carved on the bases; safe on first floor landing with panelled doors. NOTE: Said to have been occupied in the mid C19 by a tea merchant.
