Pupil teachers' centre, now education offices. 1899, by HW
Lockwood. For the Sheffield School Board. Coursed squared
stone with ashlar dressings and hipped slate roofs.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus basement and clerestory; 7 window
range. Windows are mainly casements with stone mullions and
transoms. Ground floor sillband, second floor cornice,
dentilled wooden eaves, plain coped parapet. Symmetrical front
has 2 canted 4 storey bay windows topped with spires, with
three 2-light mullioned windows on each floor. Behind them,
square ventilator shafts with corniced louvred tops. In the
centre, three 3-light elliptical arched mullioned windows with
carved tympanums. On either side, beyond the bay windows, a
similar window with plain tympanum. Above, an attic storey
with lean-to roof and four 3-light windows with wooden
mullions. Above again, clerestory has 3 similar larger
windows. Below, projecting canted central porch with
crenellated balustrade with raised coped central block with
datestone. Central 4-centred arched entrance with panelled
double doors and plain fanlight, and above it, a 3-light
mullioned lancet. On either side, a tall 3-light cross
mullioned window, and beyond, on each side, a similar single
light window. Beyond the bay windows, a tall 3-light cross
mullioned window. Basement has 6 round-headed openings with
rusticated multiple keystones. Right return has 3 floors with
a large 2-light mullioned window to each of them.
INTERIOR not inspected.
This building is one of a group illustrating the expansion of
the City's educational facilities on one site.
