Country house, now a hotel. Mid C17, remodelled early C18,
with mid C19 alterations. Converted to hotel 1976. Coursed
squared stone and ashlar, with ashlar dressings. Roof not
visible. 4 coped stone side wall stacks.
EXTERIOR: south front has a high main block, 3 storeys; 3
window range. Plinth, lintel and sillbands, quoins, open
balustrade with brackets, continued on returns. On the upper
floors, three 12 pane sashes. Below, central French window
with stone surround and broken pediment containing a shield.
On either side, a 12 pane sash. 2-storey right wing has coped
parapet. Single 12 pane sash on each floor.
Right return has three 12 pane sashes and below, 2 similar
sashes flanked to right by a C20 flat-roofed glazed wooden
porch. At the rear of this wing, two 2-light chamfered
mullioned windows on each floor. Slightly projecting 3 storey
left wing, raised C19, has ground floor lintel band and coped
parapet. Single 12 pane sash and below, a French window with
glazing bars.
Left return has a C19 round-headed margin light stair window
flanked by single small 12 pane sashes. Above, three 12 pane
sashes. C19 moulded stone doorcase with cornice, and moulded
double door with overlight. To left, a C19 canted stone bay
window with plain sashes.
INTERIOR: C18 dogleg wooden stair with vase and stem and twist
balusters with scroll brackets at the foot, and ramped
handrail. Enriched plaster ceiling to stairwell, and 2
enriched arches into south front room, which has C17 framed
panelling and enriched cross beam ceiling. C19 fireplace.
Central ground floor room has C18 moulded wall panelling,
moulded cross beam ceiling and C18 stone corner fireplace,
plus C19 marble fireplace. First-floor front room has late C17
full height panelling, cornice and overmantel. Moulded stone
fireplace c1800, and two C18 fielded panelled doors. Rear
second-floor room has similar panelling in oak, and C19
fireplace. Late C17 oak open well stair with winders with
turned balusters and ball finials.
