17 The Grove
GV II
House. Probably c.1870; altered. Brown brick in header bond,
with some red brick, sandstone dressings, and some applied
"half-timbering"; slate roof. Rectangular plan. North German
vernacular style. Two storeys, a gabled 5-window facade (the
centre window blind), with buttressed corners, bands of red
brick between the openings, ornamental half-timbering in the
gable (the lower 2 bands now missing but the pattern visible
in remaining paintwork), and projecting verges with
bargeboards and apex finial. The doorway, offset right of
centre, has a recessed panelled and glazed door and
rectangular stone lintel; the ground floor has 2 large 3-light
windows, the 1st floor has four 2-light windows (the outer 2
shorter), all these windows with raised sills and rectangular
stone lintels, and the 1st, 3rd and 5th at 1st floor with red
brick relieving arches over. Tall side-wall chimneys. rear and
interior not inspected. Part of small but distinctive
settlement, said to have been built for immigrant North German
community. Rare example of domestic architecture reflecting
cosmopolitan nature of C19 Manchester society. Forms group
with other items in The Grove including Nos 803-5 and No.807
