No.38
Regency House with Barclays Bank

GV II

Includes: No.50 SACKVILLE STREET.
Shipping or packing warehouse, now bank and offices.
c.1880-90, altered. Iron frame with sandstone ashlar and red
brick dressings (roof not visible). Trapeziform plan on island
site, with loading bay at west (left) side. Functional and
almost a-stylar design. Five storeys over basement, 6 bays
plus 3-window canted corner to right; with massive
punch-dressed plinth and piers to ground floor, frieze over
this, banded brick piers to upper floors, main cornice with
simplified Lombard frieze, low parapet with square pedestal
(or chimney?) over each pier, octagonal lantern over corner
(probably formerly domed). Doorway in right-hand corner, with
segmental pediment on coupled brackets; wide segmental-headed
archway to 3rd bay, shouldered square loading bay entrance at
left end; 2-light windows filling each bay on each floor,
diminishing in the height, all with central square pillar and
most with 9-pane glazing. Right-hand return (to Sackville
Street), 6 bays in matching style, but with segmental archways
to the 3rd and 4th bays, another to the 6th bay and at 1st
floor above this a 2-light window with pilstered stone
surround including decorated lintel and moulded cornice.
Six-bay west side similar but simpler, with fire-escape to 5th
bay. Interior not inspected.
