National Provincial bank, now offices and shop. c1890. Ashlar
with ashlar dressings, granite plinth and columns and slate
roof. 3 ornate coped stone side wall stacks. Renaissance
Revival style.
EXTERIOR: plinth, pilasters, first floor and eaves cornices,
coped parapet, single coped gable. 2 storeys plus attics; 5
window range. Windows are cross casements with stone mullions.
Corner entrance has octagonal piers with ball finials flanking
a 4-light canted oriel window with a strapwork balustrade,
crest and finial. Moulded round-arched doorway with late C20
double doors and decorated spandrels. Above it, a carved stone
coat of arms. Framing the door, 2 round granite piers with
dies.
Left return, to High Street, has octagonal flanking piers with
ball finials. Above, a single light round-headed window with
segmental pediment on brackets, and above it, an elaborate
pedimented dormer with a tiny oriel bow window. Below, a
3-light cross casement flanked by round granite piers with
dies.
Right return, to York Street, has rusticated pilasters to the
ground floor. Square projection with two 3-light windows on
each floor, the lower ones taller. To left, a 3-light window
and below, two taller 2-light windows. To right, a flush
single storey range with two 3-light windows and to right, a
square headed doorway flanked by double pilasters. Above it, a
moulded panel and a small 2-light window with a balcony. Above
and behind this range, a set back clerestory with two 3-light
mullioned windows.
